SHADOW-WORK is a steel and multimedia shadow casting tower. The work consists of a triangular center column with moveable sculpture elements and pyramidal top canopy containing lights for shadow generation. The sculpture heads will be constructed in a variety of individual shapes and forms made from acrylic components and textured steel that allow light to pass through making a suite of different colored shadows, day and night.
Participants can interact with the piece by moving and positioning the individual sculpture elements to create endless shadow compositions. The overhead lighting can be controlled to create different shadow environments at night, including RGB, single color saturation, or multi-temperature white.
The Disco Disc Dancefloor
Alex Kaufman
The Disco Disc Dancefloor is a celebration of the good times before they disappear forever—one final, dazzling party at the edge of oblivion. Suspended from above, a mirrored acrylic disc catches beams of light, scattering moving and grooving projections onto the landscape below.
The Disco Disc Dancefloor is a celebration of the good times before they disappear forever—one final, dazzling party at the edge of oblivion. Suspended from above, a mirrored acrylic disc catches beams of light, scattering moving and grooving projections onto the landscape below.
As the disc spins, the dance floor pulses with fleeting reflections of a golden era, distorted yet beautiful --- a tribute to the joy that once was. A non-stop retro playlist sets the stage for a euphoric, last-chance revelry—an invitation to dance like it’s the end of the world, because maybe it is. The world may burn, but Disco Never Dies.
Squeak Around and Find Out
Abigail Robles Membrez
"Squeak Around and Find Out" is an interactive tactile sound sculpture. Participants are encouraged to interact with each squeak. This brings out an inner childlike joy in participants that experience it.

The squeak is the primordial sound we make at the beginning of life and at the end of life. The ying-yang of sound. The squeak means everything and yet nothing at all. This installation falls under the hippie trap classification. Hippie Traps are art that is made to ensnare, confuse, beguile, the unwary, easily amused, (legally) altered hippie. It is important to note that a select few hippies will find enlightenment in embracing the squeak.
In this time of fear and confusion, laughter aids in removing suffering. While this art installation is not inherently political, participants interacting with it create acts of resistance rooted in laughter provoked by play, which in itself is a counter revolutionary act.
“When all else fails, the squeak will prevail.” – Larry Harvey
The Cardboard Playhaus
Rose Steep
Just when you thought Apo couldn’t get any more lowbrow, the Cardboard Playhaus brings it down a notch. This glorified children’s fort will host satirical Shakespeare, puppet talent shows and everyone’s favorite Puppy Musical.

Heart Opening Social Lubrication
Dave Chadwell
At the heart (literally) of this installation stands a giant upcycled tin can heart, worn with time, filled with surprises, and bursting with the spirit of gifting. With roughly 175 openings, this weathered relic of love invites participants to reach in and discover small tokens meant to uplift, nourish, and spark joy.

Beside it, a fantastically colossal metal tube of lube—not that kind of lube, but social lubrication—drips with satire.
Designed to mimic a commercial product, its oversized form and sharp-witted label parody the awkward dance of human connection, conversation skills, and the sometimes-slippery nature of social interaction. Together, these two sculptures create a striking juxtaposition: the heart, aged and earnest, a vessel for organic connection; the tube, slick and commercial, a tongue-in-cheek nod to the ways we smooth over discomfort. This playful yet thought-provoking statement piece invites people to laugh, reflect, and most importantly—engage.
InfinitEyes
Bhavana Jonnalagadda
Beautiful yet hauntingly creepy 3D infinity mirrors, in 3D weird shapes and covered in eyeballs, hang in the trees and line an LED pathway leading up to an infinity mirror box. When you look in, it is a true mirror (your reflection but reversed) that is ALSO an infinity mirror, with eyes that you slowly notice are inscribed all over it!

When you look in, it is a true mirror (your reflection but reversed) that is ALSO an infinity mirror, with eyes that you slowly notice are inscribed all over it!
All pieces are brightly glowing with addressable LED patterns. The true infinity mirror box provides a unique element of interactivity, and the hanging infinity mirror shapes will draw in any curious burner to come look at the beautiful changing patterns. The art is meant to evoke a sense of wonder and yet also uncomfortableness, as a true mirror is often unsettling and the eyes laser-etched into the infinity mirror surfaces further add to the weirdness. The shapes of the hanging pieces will be unique, with some being dodecahedrons, some being pyramids, and some being entirely strange. InfinitEyes will be a quiet yet impactful project that will entrance any Apogaean no matter what mindset they are in!

The Disco Dystopia Stage at Camp GlamAggedon
Chas Saulsbury
This project will be a centerpiece of the 2025 “Glam-a-geddon Camp.” This medium-sized sound (+ art camp), is known for their shape shifting identity and has come to Apogaea in many, many iterations - from Gnomies to Ju-Ju Manji. You know them, you love them, you can’t forget Thursday night. We can’t wait to see what they do next.

Fable Bound
Nathan Koral
Fable Bound is a wooden Viking long ship hovering over the Playa that appears to be riding ocean waves. It was constructed in 2024 and installed as an Honorarium project at Burning Man.
Fable Bound is a wooden Viking long ship hovering over the Playa that appears to be riding ocean waves. It was constructed in 2024 and installed as an Honorarium project at Burning Man.
The boat is unmistakably Viking with the classic Norse design of a longship, covered in runic carvings, adorned with traditional Viking shields and a glowing pattern carved on the prow. The ship moves with the participants weight shifting the entire structure, and is climbable from bow to stern. This grant funding will help the artists to expand and improve the artistic and narrative elements of Fable Bound.
Dystopian Disco Diner + Art Wasteland
Ian Bates, Ambra Lyons, Courtney Stone, Chrystal Goltra + Lauren Rainen
At the end of the long slide of civil society remains one last diner to catch a dystopian dinner, and to groove to the last vestiges of pre-AI DJs spinning tunes for dancers amongst a garden of former-world burn art salvaged from Burner basements far and wide.
At the end of the long slide of civil society remains one last diner to catch a dystopian dinner, and to groove to the last vestiges of pre-AI DJs spinning tunes for dancers amongst a garden of former-world burn art salvaged from Burner basements far and wide.
Tying the whole scene together is the elaborate Dystopian Diner counter, where the staff serve up culinary masterpieces; short-order crafted from the finest shelf-stable ingredients, and post-apocalyptic intelligent snark.
Above it all looms the magical dystopian disco ball conglomerated from infinite jagged shards of wayward mirrors and broken dreams. The Dystopian Diner counter is itself composed of a symphony of castaway art; reclaimed beautiful bits of the last 20 years of local Apogaean masterpieces.

A comically oversized needle will move up and down when the hand-crank on the side of the machine is turned. There will be a propane poofer atop the machine for the added pyro-element. During the evening, a battery-powered system will light up the sculpture with rainbow LED lights, illuminating it from all angles. During the daytime, Monica will host a sewing circle around the art piece. Participants of all skill levels are welcome to join in, create, and engage with the piece.
