APOGAEA 2025 EFFIGY:
Catherine the Scorpion
Evan Beloni
The general concept is to build a telehandler into a scorpion by adding legs and body to the frame of the machine. The connection to the scorpion is the boom as a tail and a personnel basket as the venom pod, elevating participants above the ground, having a phenomenal view of the event.

Obviously the venom pod shall shoot fire and the fire will be interactive and controlled by the participants (but supervised by the operator).
“In my line of work, I've been on work platforms on 56' telehandlers. It is awesome and I want to share the most glorious of my life experiences with the Apogaea community!”
APOGAEA 2025 TEMPLE:
W.H.O.O.
Mitch Giraffe, KT Rex & Beck Hargrove
W.H.O.O. is a standalone sculpture, eventually to be placed in deep playa at Burning Man. It consists of a 10 foot tall steel owl made from scrap metal, with two free-standing 4'x8' steel panels surrounding it in a square.

The panels will have CNC plasma cut poems cut out of them, the letters will be used to create the owl. When we create signs from steel, we are left with the removed letters that would normally be headed for the scrap yard. Our art team collects & upcycles the letters from our commercial projects into art. Sustainability informs the core of our artistic ethos. For W.H.O.O., the owl is a metaphor for wisdom & literacy. We will choose 2 poems, & cut them out of 1/4" thick 4'x8' steel panels, freestanding via an octagonal base.

Step up and give it a spin. You'll never see the same dance twice.... or will you…
Circle Flirt is a 4 element pendulum delivering chaotic yet soothing movement. Watch the Butterfly Effect in motion. Stark mechanical design paired with dynamic lighting effects means this seductive mechanism will be enjoyed day or night.
One simply needs to give rings a push or spin, and it will dynamically rotate. Moving any one element of the system will begin to affect all the others. Static input energy soon turns into infinite permutations. Whether or not it's in motion when people discover it, they'll soon learn how to interact with it.
“I'm personally mesmerized by chaotic pendulums, and I know a lot of my friends are too. Most of us have seen those tiny desktop pendulums, but this thing is over 6 feet high, 'wheels' bigger than a mountain bike and shimmering lights throughout the night.”
Purrfect

Purrfect is a multimedia experiential art installation that explores the healing, mesmerizing and sometimes psychedelic properties of sound and vibration through reverse engineered audio synthesis and the subharmonic translation of the frequencies of deconstructed layers of a cats purr. It's Purrfect.

Participants are invited to interact with and experience sound and vibration like never before insides of a twelve foot dodecahedron. This is not your average sound bath or shower, this is as unforgettable as riding a wave or purr over Niagara Falls in a whisky barrel - with your ten best friends, it's Purrfect.
The interior includes four wooden perimeter vibrating benches, a scaled down dodecahedron pendulum speaker array, and is complete with matching dodecahedron center table housing a down-firing high excursion subwoofer, where participants are invited to work together to construct and to manipulate the purring sounds around them.

A pink wooden castle tower lights up as a radiant beacon, a playful parody of a certain Coloradan relic—but utterly reimagined into something wholly unique of a dystopian future era. The castle will have decrepit textures and fake, creative foliage spilling from windows for a solar punk vibe.

Apogaeans will see the pink tower in the distance, and giggle at its landmark homage. Upon entering the arched doors, a playful inner-child will ride a swing or climb to a higher second story viewpoint window. They may notice how run-down and decrepit, yet full of life this solar punk lounge feels.
Infinity

Infinity is a full body transformative visual experience. Extending and multiplying the self. Overpowering your senses and entering an all encompassing space that is created uniquely by your presence.

Step into a hexagon of mirrors and transform into a multitude of selves. This project is intended as a night time activation. It will come to life automatically as the sun goes down, and go to sleep when the sun rises. It will be built from steel, wood, plexiglass, and the labor of the local metal artist community.
The inspiration for this project is to create an interactive art piece that blends the artificial and the natural. The intersection between human and machine. It is my desire to create full body kaleidoscope experience, creating a unique experience for each individual.
From an aesthetic perspective, it is the multiplication of the self, and who doesn't love looking at themselves? Imagine yourself inside of a disco ball.
Corpse Flower
KT Rex & Beck Hargrove
Death is part of life. Death has shaped who I am and its vines have spread through my cells. This piece continues to celebrate the beauty of death in life. This will be the final piece of our carnivorous plant garden.

Our idea is to create a life size metal sculpture of the Corpus flower. She will stand 2.8’ in height and 7’ wide. On this project we will be using multiple metal forming techniques such as hydroforming, traditional blacksmithing, and patina work. Patina is caused by oxidation in the metal. It is a chemical process that occurs on the metal. Her inner flower will be a hydroformed dome with the petals will be patinated.
The corpus flower is among a few rare plants that have the ability to raise their internal temperature up to 30 degrees. It's fitting to add fire to it. We are creating static fire for this piece. The hope for people to enjoy the warmth of the fire while interacting with the rest of our garden.
Drums, Fire, Lights!

Fire leaping at the sound of a drum while a disco ball reflects the sparkle of Apogaea – that is the goal of this interactive fire art display, a trailer mounted platform participants can play on two drums that musically control both flame bursts from towers and flash red and blue spotlights on the rotating disco ball.

Each flame tower will be topped with a wire frame creature head chosen to represent a classic conflict – for example a snake and an eagle. This art installation will foster participation as attendees use drums to control the lights and fire in any way they wish – perhaps as a duet, perhaps as a duel. The stage will be set for two participants to present their drumming skills.
Slime Court!

“I’ll see YOU in Slime Court!”
The phrase all of Apogaea dreads. As they read the pink copy of the quadruplicate paperwork, faces ashen, they quiver with fear and trepidation. Their time in court is nigh.

Slime Court is an interactive, participatory space modeled after a 19th century British courthouse. With a raised bench for the honourable Slime Judge, a plaintiff and defence podiums, benches for witnesses and the jury, a slimed-up stenography machine, a pad for the sketch artist, and a jail; this space will look eerily similar to an actual courtroom… Besides the slime.
A large steel sign with glowing green LEDs welcomes perpetrators and victims alike, with our signature phrases, ‘Try Me’ and ‘Don’t Judge Me.’ In the center stands a statue of the Scales of Justice, constantly dripping with neon green slime. The Judge beckons, his green robes and slimy powdered wig bright in the UV and green light bathing the courtroom.

Is this a wise use of Apogaea's money?
“If awe and wonder has value, then absolutely it's worth it. I think that's how we justify spending funds for the “ooohs and awws” …. I often hear comments like ‘this is the most interactive art piece ever,’ ‘coolest art ever,’ and ‘most beautiful art ever.’”
Garden of the Wads
Adam Keeton
An interactive alien garden featuring animatronics and LED animations. The Garden is large enough for multiple participants to explore, builds on past work, and is part of an evolving series.
An interactive alien garden featuring animatronics and LED animations. The Garden is large enough for multiple participants to explore, builds on past work, and is part of an evolving series.
Garden of the Wads will feature multiple unique Wads, distributed such that participants can be surrounded by them. Some of the Wads will incorporate animatronics. The envisioned aesthetic is inspired by cordyceps. In the wild, cordyceps infect and grow out of bugs.
Interactivity is facilitated with the use of infrared sensors. The sensors detect objects within close proximity (currently <12"). When a sensor is triggered, an LED animation for the respective Wad will change. On Wads with animatronics, sensors can also trigger movement.
