Introducing the 2017 Effigy and Temple!

CATS is currently busy reviewing and scoring 25 Seed Round grant applications, we’ll announce those projects mid April.   But in the meantime we’re excited to announce this year’s Effigy and Temple!

Effigy

$8000

Heart of Gold (Effigy)

by Mark Switzer and Jules Pellerin, in loving memory of Skyler and Isabel

Heart of Gold is a beautifully profound sculpture with several advanced flame effects (and surprises) for the 2017 Apogaea Effigy. Heart of Gold will be a collaborative piece of art, allowing community members to get involved in creating and operating the piece, offering opportunities for both new and experienced artists to learn more about the fire arts and fabrication skills. The core sculpture of Heart of Gold is also a gift to the Apogaea community and will be left in the care of Apogaea to use for future events as desired.

Speleo Mountain
$6,969.69

A whole mountain of cubes for you to climb, dance, and play.

Outside In

$6,645.79
Artists: Jeff Merkel and the Signal-to-Noise Labs sci-art collective

Outside In is a unique audio immersive environment that envelops the artists and audiences in three dimensional audio soundscapes, transporting visitors, artists, and musicians on acoustic journeys overlain upon the real-world local environment.

Outside In is about merging and blurring environments, people, and experiences. There is no audience and artist separation; the artist/performer becomes part of the audience and the audience participates in and sometimes is the performance. There is no separation of the performance from external environments; sights, sounds, and smells are invited in and becomes part of the unique and transient performance, never to be exactly repeated. The outside is brought in…

The Queen of the Night
$5,250
Artists: Caitlin Morris and Joshua Birkmaier

With this installation, we offer a space where shamanistic healing can be explored.  A place where we can take ahold of our journey together by provide a catalyst to our shared experience with this representation of the unique beauty that exists within our temporal boundaries. The center piece of this installation is an artistic representation of a Selenicereus Grandiflorus, a desert flower that only blooms for one night once a year commonly known as “The Queen of the Night.” This plant will be depicted in steel with a low-poly design and will feature flame effects in the blossom and in the stems in the center of the plant.  This short-lived plant articulates the ephemeral nature of our experience with this place and time and we seek to inspire a sense of immediacy. The flower will sit atop a large steel mandala podium. We would like to further set this intention of immediacy with ornate designs as well as phrases that will be hand plasma-cut into the sides of the mandala. This installation will also bring back two sculptures from Apogaea 2016, The Crystalline Obelisks but with a new explosive and interactive twist.

Club Smash Club
$4042.31

A cathartic release through carnal expression. To smash hate, smash prejudice, and disposable culture. To hone human form with new tools. To provide a unique and immersive environment. Long live metal!

Mercury Touchstone
$2,500
Artists: Bad Asstronauts , Brian Weatherhead (artist)

12’ Interactive space rocket covered in 6,000 LEDs.

SoundPuddle
$1907.21
Artists: John English, Austin Glaser, Kevin McWilliams, and crew

SoundPuddle is an interactive space of visual-acoustic synesthesia. This spectrographically colorful dome illuminates sound on an immersive canopy of light. Visualize spectral shapes of sound with any noise you can make.

This established art installation is being redesigned from the ground up, with a much larger LED array and entirely new custom circuit boards. The updated installation will be roughly eight times greater in LED resolution, 32 times faster in its visual update speed, and 100 times faster in its audio analysis rate. This performance upgrade will reveal rich and meaningful features of sound that have have been missing from SoundPuddle until now, such as the subtleties of vibrato, the first crash of percussion, or musical harmonics that span the full frequency range of human hearing. This is the perfect place to bring your musical instruments and selves for a unique and mind-warping sensory experience. You will laugh, shout, and sing as thousands of solar powered LEDs unify your ears and eyes.

Bon*fire
$1,409
Artist:  Evan Beloni

Bon*fire is a series of small fire sculptures that come together to form an array of LPG fire, dazzling lights and most importantly: Water.  A clear plenum houses a column of water with propane bubbles rising from the bottom. The propane bubbles burst at the surface, mix with air then burn off. This bubbling also creates a calming sound, somewhat like a flowing creek. Further mesmerizing display is provided by color changing lights illuminating through the bubbling water.  Large flame poofing and interactivity will also be involved.

All of You
$1,276
Artists: Mike Lustig

All of You is a semi-circle arrangement of 6 mirrored-mosaics. Participants can experiment with distance, angle, and motion to experience fragmented expansion, separated replication, and strobing of movement. As a viewer moves further from the installation, their reflection inverts, and then disintegrates into an abstract arrangement of light. All of You will be continuously influenced by sky light and its surrounding environment. My goal is to catalyze the consideration of an expansive, shared, ever-changing existence.

Almighty Lite-brite
$1,000
Artists: Jill Katzenberger and Piper Merriam

Remember building unicorns and rainbows on your lite brite, sequestered from the sunlight (and your siblings) in the closet, back when life was simple and cough syrup tasted like candy?  Well get ready to relive your fondest childhood memories on the ALMIGHTY LITE BRITE…a souped up and super scaled up lite brite for Apogaea’s young and young at heart.  Larger than a grown man…more pegs than you could moop in a drunken stupor…and enough light to power a very (very) small village.

Before we announce who’s going to be ARTING at Apo 2016 we want to thank THE FUCKING UNICORNS for their girthy donation in the amount of $5,000.69  which they raised at their recent epic party and donated to our art budget this year.  Upon their funds consensually penetrating our bank account we immediately raised the total grant budget to $10,600.

We did consider re-naming this grant round the Unicorn Round but hey we’re Apo and naming rights isn’t really a thing we do (unless you want a porta-potty, we’ll happily sell naming rights to the potties).

But in all seriousness we are extremely grateful to the Unicorns for all of their love of art, CATS, moist-ness, moist-cats, and helping Apo get back on our paws, I mean feet.

HUG (or dry hump) A UNICORN TODAY!

2016 GRANTS

In semi-alphabetical order, so calm your titties we’re not playing favorites.  Also note we’re only including as much info about a project as the artist elected to provide for the announcement, as there’s something to be said for surprises.

Crystalline Obelisks – $599

Artist: Joshua Birkmaier, Caitlin Morris

About: Low-polygon is a popular style of graphic art that we would like to apply to the 3rd dimension. These two low-polygon towers would mimic the crystalline structure of Fluorite’s cube. These sculptures will be internally lit and cracks in the cube structure will be designed into the pieces to allow light to shine through adding color and interest to the sculptures. This new piece would represent the re-cristalization of our community and add even more exciting ambience to the Animal Farm village. Through, pressure, time, dispersion, re-amalgamation, and moisture, we can form a new structure, we can re-crystalize.

Artists: Jamie Vaida & Alvin Sessions.

Interior decor and lighting by: Chris Myers & Erin Ries

About: The Shack-To-Hell-U-Ride is an artistic interpretation of a Colorado Miners cabin that is on fire (built on the chassis of a chopped-down 1989 Ford Transporter van). This mutant vehicle has been safely modified to have a dynamically flaming roof. The Shack is made out of found objects, wood and artifacts from the mining era in Telluride, Colorado. The interior space resembles a miners cabin complete with a wrought iron bed, a vintage parlor wood stove, and a vintage 1920s icebox for chilling beverages. Our goal is to inspire people to recycle, learn about the mining era history and enjoy the warmth of the “shack”. The special effects on this one-of-a-kind shack include a burning roof (literally)!

Guests will be able to interact with the fire element to make the “chimney” poof by pushing the button from inside the shack. The shack is being brought to Apogaea by the Telluride Fire Festival, a nonprofit fire arts event produced annually by Erin & Chris.

Build Crew: The Card Soldiers (EK, DK, AC, LB)

About:: Immerse yourself in a quirky art-and-mind experience by walking Through the Logic Glass. Through the Logic Glass is an installation inspired by both traditional Alice in Wonderland artwork by John Tenniel and Lewis Carroll’s logic puzzles (he was a mathematician and played a lot with symbolic logic). On the exterior of the installation are painted art panels in a primitivist style. The interior has two entrances and two chambers (one, a normal chamber and the other a wonderland chamber) separated by (you guessed it) a mirror. In one chamber, it’s the wonderful world of Alice, and in the other, the strange world of wonderland. Move from one to the next by solving a whimsical logic puzzle or two. Fun for all.

Truffula Tree Hammock Oasis – $599

Build Crew: Truffula Tramps Build Crew under Capt. CidKid

About: Walking into the Apogaea valley the eyes behold a sea of glowing fluffy trees. On approach the ears hear soft ambient soundscapes. The grass is lush and comfortable where seating seems to grow straight from the ground. The trees are out of this world; black horizontal jagged stripes atop slender stalks of an off-white yellow, with tuffs of pastel cotton floating atop like dandelion spores—all alive with sound and light and wonder! The trees are straight from the pages of Dr. Seuss and a strange orange creature, the Lorax, passes out tasty truffula treats; compostable straws with cotton candy fluffs.

Stretched between the trees are relaxing hammocks swaying in the breeze and basking in the shade of the large colorful truffs. Nestled in the trees, water misters spray a refreshing MOISTure into the area, providing an oasis away from hot days complete with a an interactive sound and light show at night. Whenever you and your guests catch the Lorax sleeping in the trees, he’ll provide you with compostable candy treats. (Check the WWWW for detailed times and days on interactive events).

At night, the trees come alive! The ground is safely lit with rope lights marking obstacles and the installations area. The trees provide ambient light and the 100 LED programmable pixels dance and swirl inside the truffs. The trees are thick and sturdy, they beg to be touched and hugged. The stripes are soft, almost plush, when you grab one, the Truffula Tree laughs and giggles with light and sound. The stripes are switches, and each one plays a different sound with corresponding color, multiplexed for endless combinations!

With your lover or best friend in hand, you both reach for a tree to play and sing with the colorful Damanhur forest of Truffula trees. When you do, you multiplex one tree into many and the more connections between trees the more light and color and sound! Bring the whole forest alive with a group of friends as you each touch a tree and each other, completing the electric circuit…of life, love, and all trees give us. Upon leaving the magical space the reminders are clear, UNLESS. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” As an added bonus to the theme of the installation, the build team is donating $100 per tree to Rainforest land conservation.

Temple of Resonance

Temple of resonance is a three-dimensional mandala installation. The primary components of the Mandela are five Tibetan inspired bell towers. The largest and central tower measures in at 13 ft and is surrounded by four 10-foot tall towers of the same design. Each bell will be made from recycled gas containers and will create piece of a five part major chord when played together. In between each 10 foot tower there will be corner shaped communal bench. Providing a place for connection, contemplation and laughter. Surrounding all of this will be twelve 2-foot tall pagodas placed in a ring defining the perimeter of the temple Mandela.

The Speleobox

The SpeleoBox is a cave simulator. It is an 8 foot wooden cube with and entrance and an exit. Between is 120 feet of twisting turning linear passageway. Participants crawl in through the entrance and work their way through to the exit. In between they will encounter turns and twists that they need to squeeze and squirm through.

Church of Prometheus

Prometheus is the Greek god who stole fire from Mt. Olympus and brought it down to humanity. For this, he was punished by Zeus by being chained to a mountainside for eternity. The fire he gave us also represents life’s intensity: creativity, passion, soul. As Burners, these are all things we “worship.” This installation will create a place to worship–a full-blown church of Prometheus, though somewhat of a caricature.

www.facebook.com/ChurchOfPrometheus

Jedi Fire Simon

Jedi Fire Simon (JFS) is a twist on the electronic interactive Simon game from 1978. JFS will be identical to the original game, where a player has to repeat a series of button presses determined at random by the device. Much like the original, the JFS device will have four colored (or illuminated) buttons. Each button will produce a corresponding individualized tone, color, and fire when pressed. Fire will come from one of 4-1” discharge cannons located in the corners of the game play field. Additionally, fire will come from a fifth fire cannon, 2” discharge, located above the game control board will produce a massive (+70’) flame effect when a player successfully completes a set number of turns or rounds.

Colossal Head

The ‘Colossal Head’ project is an interactive art installation piece that can be enjoyed by any and all people. It utilizes a live video camera feed and projection mapping onto a giant facade of a blank face. Participants approach an area in front of the Colossal Head and stand, finding the correct spot that suits their head size and shape, and their face is projected onto the Colossal Head. The image of the face will be processed, using video hardware and software to create a live, enhanced, real-time show of the participants face. Participants will be encouraged to make faces and ‘face dance’ to enhance the viewing experience. Since the participants will have a clear view of the head, which will be positioned in front of them, they will enjoy interacting with the piece.

The Kindling Project

As seen at Burning Man 2015 and Denver Decomp 2015, the Kindling Project is a infinite mirror concept the creates the illusion of complex equilateral triangles floating above a bottomless pit that is boring in the ground at a 55 degree angle.

The Thing

The Thing is a fully articulated skeletal robotic hand, about 7’ long, crafted from clear polycarbonate and aluminum using our new Shopbot! The sculpture will be mounted on a 36” square, six wheel robot chassis and easily have the ability to pull a cart or “chariot” with one or two drivers. This project is being designed and built by members of the Boulder High robotics team, with a senior design student lead for independent study credit. The students will be mentored on the mechanics/construction by Janet Tsai from the CU Dept of Engineering, (and myself) and on the control system by programming guru Bill Coon.  The THING will use an android tablet for both tele-operated and autonomous control, and will have a menu of pre-programed functions. The most basic will be to create the illusion of it crawling along at the blistering speed of about 7′ per minute.

War on Peace (the race formerly know as the Apo Death Race)

This is one race you do NOT want to lose. A race against death. You must speed your Big Wheel down the length of the course, grab a weapon and eliminate your competition before they eliminate YOU. The only way to survive is to WIN!

Blingshop

BlingExample1_DongGongIf Apogaea has taught me anything over the years, it’s that damn it feels good to be a gangsta. One can never be too hood, so I propose a Blingshop, where those feeling less than swagtastic can get they pimp on by creating their own custom gold chainz. This workshop will be shorty friendly so bring the lil’ playas and y’all be ballin’ by the time you leave this Blingshop.

Burnin’ to the Beat

This project is a pair of Ruben’s tubes (6 and 8 feet), and is a classic physics experiment to visualize sound waves which drive the rise and fall of flames along a perforated gas tube. The gas flow changes as the sound pressure inside the tube changes, rewarding the viewer with fiery sine waves when a tone is played, or complex fiery wave forms of constructive and destructive interference when music is played. In other words, we see the fire dance to the music.

Burnin to the Beat

Camp Conviviality Live Music Stage

Camp LonerVille

Camp LonerVille is the physical manifestation of an audio project that strives to express: being alone is a shared experience and unconditional love for other simply because they exist.  At the end of the trail, a beautician’s chair wrapped in warm white lights will sit. There will be headphones attached to the inside of the bulby hair drying extension with a cd player securely attached to the right arm of the chair. With a click of the play button on the CD player, the sound of someone’s soothing voice will surround you with words of affirmation and love.  There are people on this earth who don’t know you who appreciate and care about you as an individual. Apogaea is a space for many curious wanderers who deserve a reminder that they are unconditionally loved.

Grubstation – The Intergalactic Chuckwagon Returns

After a year under windy blue skies, billowing bbq smoke and blowing snow, the tarp resembled a giant hula skirt waving into the sunset. Underneath though the intergalactic chuckwagon is rearing to get back to the mountains and return as Grubstation ~ we’re gonna cook up grub daily! All the silly and always interactive times (show hate camp how to hate u-huh) we had last year as the time travelers convention, showed the most important thing is having others participate in our schemes.

Just Waiting on Ewe: Eating Ewe Out! (Concessions)

Just Waiting on Ewe movie camp has shown everything from cult favorites to “What the hell did I just watch?!?” from dark-ish to dead-ish for the last four years. We show a diverse selection of movies that will cater to a significant portion of Apogaea’s event population.  These grant funds will be used to provide popcorn and candy. Serving tasty treats goes hand and hand with movies and would help make our theater ultra realistic. It is also nice to have a snack when you’re wandering around late at night.

Late Nite Price is Right

Get off on our fabulous prizes as we bring much needed consumerist exuberance to Apogaea! Building upon Bob Barker’s long obsession with genitalia, we will adapt game show challenges to adult themes, pushing community participants to leave their comfort zones behind.

Screaming J’s

Put on your dancing shoes, Apogaea! We’re joining forces with Camp Conviviality and the Shangri La La Lounge and we’re on a mission to bring you as much boogie as you can handle!  The Screaming Js are a good-for-the-soul boogie woogie piano band out of Asheville. We are a 3-piece acoustic band – upright piano, string bass and percussion – and are very adaptable in terms of location and volume. We travel with a collapsible stage set – backdrop, proscenium and LED lighting. We plan on playing most (if not all) days and/or nights at Camp Conviviality & the Shangri La La Lounge, and wherever else spontaneous opportunity offers. We hope to perform a show at Center Camp.

Super Animatron

Super Animatron is a computer controlled array of individually addressable cells of color changing LED light. Using a custom host PC application to design and play animations, SA sends animation data at 60 frames per second to a series of Arduino UNO embedded microcontrollers, which then generate 12-bit dimming data for each individual LED. Additionally SA uses a microphone and digital signal processing algorithms to allow sound to interact with and influence the animations in real-time.

The Illumine by the Arty Boys

Our project is titled “illumine” which means to “light up.” This is a simple explanation for what it does. We are creating a set of lights that can be suspended over a dark walkway or trail. The illumine will detect a persons motion and light up with moving patterns that spin and invoke the illusion of water or flames. Depending on our fundraising efforts we hope to construct at least 2 (but hopefully more) to illuminate an otherwise dark part of Apogaea.

The Octopussy

The Octopussy is a medium size stationary mutant vehicle that will explore the depths of time and space. A radically internally illuminated octopus/cat hybrid creature, the Octopussy, is perched on top of a Geo Metro that has been decorated to appear as a rock in the interstellar ocean. The Octopussy has ears and nose like a cat, and eyes and tentacles like an octopus. The entire structure is covered in white projection grade spandex and internally illuminated by strips of multicolor LEDs connected to a sound reactive controller. This gives the Octopussy the ability to change color and pattern on the fly, much like her octopus brethren. Lighting up the night sky, she will bring joy and wonder to all who lay eyes upon her. In addition, this underwater lounge will have interior blue rope lighting and large plush seating (3-6 people, depending on how snuggly they want to get) and comes complete with a treasure chest!

The Unusually Large Kaleidoscope

Do you remember looking into a kaleidoscope as a kid, the way that the magic of refraction turned simple translucent shapes into complex tessellated patterns of awesomeness?! Ladies and Gentlemen, we bring you the Unusually Large Kaleidoscope, a simple yet giant machine built on the same principles but in an epic scale. Whereas the kaleidoscope of the old days was a solitary toy, we have designed this Unusually Large one to be played with cooperatively. While multiple people can peer into the Unusually Large Peephole at the same time, still other participants control the spinning end of the Kaleidoscope; interactive fun for everyone!

Wardrobe MalFUNKtion KumFort and Transport

This will be Camp Wardrobe MalFUNKtion’s 5th year of costuming Apogaea!! Our camp members are hard at work raising funds to replace/improve several key part of our infrastructure, including new staging, signage, safety measures, and of course, purchasing costumes and supplies! We are asking CATS to help with these specific costs for Apogaea 2015: New and Improved KumFort Station structure with signage and lighting, Gas money for camp transport to and from the festival, and Trailer rental to bring all the costumes and camp infrastructure to Apo.

WonderLounge

WonderLounge will bring you a very burner twisted Wonderland (i.e. Alice in…). We intend to titillate you and fuck with all of your senses (in the most pleasant of ways, of course).  Enter through the Looking Glass (i.e. a giant ornate frame) and you’ll immediately find yourself “down” the Rabbit Hole. When you emerge, you’ll find yourself in Wonderland where you may play flamingo croquet on our 24-hour LED lit course. When the Mad Hatter’s Bar is open, receive a cup of tea (dependent on the event, adult beverages or actual tea, including herbal). As you glance about, notice our fancifully and colorfully decorated house where Alice grows and you too can simulate growing too large.

You Are Here

You Are Here is a three-dimensional sign spelling out those words. The words will be topped by a downward pointing arrow as you might see on a map. It serves as a sculptural spectacle; it emanates changing, glowing, strobing, colorful light at night. It also serves as a reference point and landmark. We hope that our sign may serve as a place to meet up with friends, or something to guide participants toward in the dark nights.  Our sign will orient Apogaea participants in space, time, and appreciation. We hope that our sign will serve both as a landmark in physical space, and also as a reminder of how important it is to appreciate the present moment.

These are all the short descriptions and URLs from the applications. These are in alphabetical order.

  • Angel Poofers – The angel poofers are the fire and performance aspect that Syzygy just would not be complete without. Like holding a candle to the idea of an effigy set ablaze.  The poofers will be set atop the Effigy’s pedestal in the Syzygy installation. One for each angel to hold as torches/pens. The settings will be the only aspect of Syzygy that is made of metal. See https://www.facebook.com/syzygy2015 for more details.
  • Apo Death Race – This is one race you do NOT want to lose. A race against death. You must speed your Big Wheel down the length of the course, grab a weapon and eliminate your competition before they eliminate YOU. The only way to survive is to WIN! See https://www.facebook.com/groups/apogaea/permalink/10153060048367707/ for more details.
  • Blingshop – If Apogaea has taught me anything over the years, it’s that damn it feels good to be a gangsta. One can never be too hood, so I propose a Blingshop, where those feeling less than swagtastic can get they pimp on by creating their own custom gold chainz. This workshop will be shorty friendly so bring the lil’ playas and y’all be ballin’ by the time you leave this Blingshop. For more details, see https://docs.google.com/a/apogaea.com/file/d/0B13Y7Tayr9WyTW5GMS10UDAyVWc/edit
  • Burger Camp – Burger Camp will be presenting 2 speciality sliders and fresh french fries Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday during the day. What could be more wonderful than a fresh slider and french fries up in the mountains – a special treat. We will also be providing live entertainment for your dining pleasure. So, don’t forget to bring your own plate and palate to enjoy our burger sensations! See https://docs.google.com/a/apogaea.com/file/d/0B0Gd8E6gYzT-Y3hzYjF3SlRSSms/edit for more details
  • Burnin’ to the Beat – This project is a pair of Ruben’s tubes (6 and 8 feet), and is a classic physics experiment to visualize sound waves which drive the rise and fall of flames along a perforated gas tube. The gas flow changes as the sound pressure inside the tube changes, rewarding the viewer with fiery sine waves when a tone is played, or complex fiery waveforms of constructive and destructive interference when music is played. In other words, we see the fire dance to the music. See http://img.fae.ro/f91a04.jpeg for more details
  • Camp Conviviality Live Music Stage – We will be presenting live music by an amazing array of performers from early afternoon till 8:00 PM Thursday and Friday, noon-5pm on Saturday. We will be providing a Stage, PA and Monitors, Mics, Stage Lighting and a club atmosphere. We are providing musicians with a camp and meals in return for their participation as solo artists, bands and jams.  We will host an official Happy Hour event on Friday with food and drink. See http://www.facebook.com/groups/1567427290198651/ for more details.

  • Daylight Box – Daylight Box is a nighttime chill space. Imagine walking down the road at Apogaea at night, you spot a thick cluster of light ahead of you. As you approach, you see that it is an enclosed structure, draped with more Christmas lights than you could ever imagine being in a single place! You look inside past the first luminous strands at the entrance to see a comfy lounge area with a carpeted floor and plush pillows arrayed under a stunning canopy of LED lights, twinkling and blinking invitingly. Walking inside, your eyes adjust and the outside world disappears; you can see your companions clear as daylight under the blaze. Looking over you see a pair of fireworks glasses nearby, you put them on; the lights come alive in a mesmerizing dance, leaping and exploding in front of you. You’re riveted, comfortable, safe. This is a place to rest, to breathe in and out with the rippling of the twinkling lights that surround you. For a while you lose yourself in the therapeutic rhythm of the lights and the soft comfort of the pillows, taking time to reflect or enjoy the wide space of your mind, which in this hypnotic space has quieted for a moment. When it’s time for the next adventure, you two get up and walk out the way you came in and enjoy the rest of your night refreshed. See http://www.daylightbox.com for more details.

  • Hin-Han: Guardian of the Milky Way – This large scale propane burning owl sculpture called Hin-Han will be included in the Animal Farm art installation to guard the gate of our garden of spirit animals and dark, otherworldly creatures and performances. Hin-Han is a stoic and ageless spirit whose dark and looming presences will signify the impending chaos held within Animal Farm’s gates.  According to ancient Sioux folklore, the owl is depicted as an ominous figure whose appearance indicates imminent death. The owl, according to these Northwestern plains people, was believed to call out the names those who are destined to meet their own demise. Once a soul has passed he must meet Hin-Han, the guardian of the Milky Way and the gate keeper of the spirit world. If the soul fails to pass the old owl’s inspection because he does not have the tattoo of his tribe, he is thrown into the bottomless abyss. Hin-Han, though he may seem like like a breathtaking and welcoming character, will carry this more sinister meaning in our cast of discordian creatures. See https://www.facebook.com/HinHanOwl for more details

  • Laserland Glowitarium – There are lights, there are stars…….but what if you could control the positions of the stars in the “sky” above you? Look for the Laserland Glowitarium somewhere out there amongst the trees on your nightly journey and let us put the power of creation in your hands.  We will have random laser shows sometime between 8pm and 10pm, and will be viewable in front of the theaters. Viewers will not be allowed inside the theaters while the laser shows are happening. During the day, we may just have a random tea party or 5, served right beside our bacon and dab bar. We do not currently have a time or a schedule for these tea parties just yet, but rest assured, you’ll wanna eat the cake.At night: ‘The Midnight Game Show at 2am’ – Thursday night/Friday morning at 1am. Contestants will compete for fun and prizes. The Stoner Happy Hour Funtime Scavenger Hunt – Tentatively planned for Saturday afternoon from 2:00-4:20pm. • Robot Resurrection (Repairs) – Robot Resurrection is towering 30 foot tall, human piloted, articulating sculpture made from 95% airplane parts. From the torso cockpit, the operator(s) manipulate the Robot’s motions and fire effects. The arms and head articulate like you would expect of a giant Robot. Lighting and laser effects are built into the piece for an integrated performance like no other, on a scale that few people have ever experienced.  These funds will be used for repairs to the Robot including: polishing metal, repainting places where paint has chipped off or painting things that are beginning to rust, replacing lights that have burned out etc., replacing missing bolts, straightening steel and aluminum that have been bent and dented, replacing motors, and tightening chains. The technical repairs mostly address issues of fire effects, such as re-wiring and replacing ignitors. See https://www.facebook.com/RobotResurrection for more details
  • Robot Resurrection (Transportation) – Robot Resurrection is towering 30 foot tall, human piloted, articulating sculpture made from 95% airplane parts. From the torso cockpit, the operator(s) manipulate the Robot’s motions and fire effects. The arms and head articulate like you would expect of a giant Robot. Lighting and laser effects are built into the piece for an integrated performance like no other, on a scale that few people have ever experienced.  These grant funds will be used for transporting the Robot to Apogaea, and supporting it’s operation on-site. The truck doubles as the resurrector for the Robot, with the boom and winch mounted directly to them and then removed. Both pieces of equipment are integral parts of the Robot and need some repairs. In order to operate the Robot at Apogaea we need gas and propane. See https://www.facebook.com/RobotResurrection for more details.

  • Sleazy Beaches – It’s the middle of summer, and even though you’re a mile high, livin’ the mountain life, you deserve to go to the beach. When arrive, you deserve to be handed a premium fresh fruit blended island cocktail, and given a place to relax and enjoy the beach vibes and killer tunes.  Here at Sleazy Beaches, this is exactly what to expect. From afar, before you even hear the sounds of the beach, you will be able to tell if the bar is open, and what color of Sleazy beverages are being whipped up by one of our cool butt bartenders.  But we’re more than just a bar and sound camp, we create an opportunity for connections, in an oasis away from the chaos. A comfortable place to relax and lounge, to chat with the people around you and of course, to dance.  Interactivity is really what we strive for, with plans for hammocks, picnic tables, “the pool” which will be a mega cargo net with the illusion of water and pool toys on top and a led 10 ft tall sleazy drink which will show the color of our drinks for the day from afar. See http://www.sleazybeaches.com for more details

  • That Which Is Most Beautiful: The TWIMBY Community Labyrinth – That Which Is Most Beautiful: The TWIMBY Community Labyrinth is a hand-painted, 3-turn labyrinth with 7-foot-high cloth walls made of 70 unique blacklight-reactive paintings created by Apogaeans and our friends. A sign above the entrance entices and intrigues you with the words, “THAT WHICH IS MOST BEAUTIFUL.” This “walk in beauty” is inspired by the Diné people’s belief that we create the world around us, and if we walk with beauty in our hearts and minds, the world will be a more beautiful place. As you walk the three long turns of the labyrinth, bathing in the high-vibrational flourescent atmosphere, you read self-and-community-affirming messages from indigenous healers and spiritual visionaries from around the world. Accompanying you is an ambient soundscape of evocative global grooves, multilingual blessings and samplings from our community musicians. The TWIMBY Community Labyrinth is a radiant, loving mirror of our hearts’ intelligence and those experiential states that have the power to transform and elevate our relationships with self and others, such as empathy, trust, compassion, equanimity, acceptance and love. It’s a welcoming space for not only meditation and reflection, but also music-making, dancing, and creative perambulating with your companions. It’s created to be loved for all that we are…with all that we are. See http://bit.ly/1wk3bWp for more details.

  • The Vikings of Niceness, aka The Rampaging Horde of Giftlandia – The Vikings of Niceness, aka The Rampaging Hordes of Giftlandia, is a large-group performance art piece. The purpose of this art piece is to contrast the unsettling feeling of seeing a large, intimidating group of people, screaming bloody-murder, threatening to overrun your camp, event, or village with the silly fun that results when the victims of the Rampage find the Vikings giving the people in said area food, drinks and gifts, cleaning up moop, and then leaving with as much bellowing and ferocity as when they arrived.  See http://www.facebook.com/vikingsofniceness for more details. The recipient declined the grant and the funds were not disbursed.

  • You Are Here – You Are Here is a 3 dimensional sign, spelling out those words. See https://docs.google.com/a/apogaea.com/file/d/0B0Gd8E6gYzT-VFlpOFVyeDhTcDA/edit for more details.

The Big Money Round has Ended!

The GOOD NEWS is we received 33 proposals for mind-blowing art!!  The BAD NEWS is we had requests for almost 6 times the amount of money we had to give out and had to make 26 people really, really sad.

2015 has seen an unprecedented number of grant applications.  We want to say thank you for spending the time to submit an application and that we’re sorry we can’t approve them all!  We hope to have even more money to give as grants next year, so keep those ideas coming!

Descriptions of Projects

These are all the short descriptions and URLs from the applications.

  • Colossal Head – The ‘Colossal Head’ project is an interactive art installation piece that can be enjoyed by any and all people.

  • Synchrotensegrity – Synchrotensegrity is a 15 ft tall, 15ft diameter interactive effigy consisting of three pillars arching to a common central point at the top. The pillars are tensegrity structures meaning they are composed of wood compression struts and stranded steel tension cables where none of the compression struts touch each other and appear to float. This is a stable structure that appears to defy the laws of gravity. The wood struts will be hand-spun on a wood lathe from 2x2x4ft material. Each of the struts will have a unique shape.  With respect to this year’s theme, Synchronicity, the philosophy of this piece is to illustrate the chance connections brought about in this world of a mind-numbing amount of variables and events that shape our lives. Each of the three pillars will be wrapped in strands of addressable rgb leds. Individual leds will be illuminated in short bursts in a random pattern representing random events in the world. There will be a sensor at the base of each pillar and when a participant stands near it the random led pattern will coalesce into a more tangible form which will begin to flow toward the top of the pillar. When this form from two or three of the pillars reaches the top at the same time, a tesla coil at the top will discharge an arc of high-voltage electricity between the pillars representing a synchronistic event.

  • Syzygy: The Library Angel (THE EFFIGY) – A common experience many people have of synchronicity is known as a Library Angel. The Library Angel represents that moment of awareness when an answer to a question or the discovery of otherwise illusive information becomes known to a person, almost as if by fate. The effigy represents this experience of synchronicity and invites the viewer to reflect on their beliefs about the nature of discovery and knowing. Is the library angel a kind and helpful spirit here to bring about joy in knowledge, or a trickster demon laying clues that guide us down devilish paths? Do moments of synchronicity appear as challenges in one moment, but saving graces later in life? Perhaps they come as conflicting evidence that points to the same conclusion. Participants are asked to share their stories of synchronicity at the foot of the Library Angel in her giant journal, which will be burned at the end of the event making space for new discoveries in the hearts and minds of all Apogaeans.  Along with sharing stories in the giant journal, Apogaeans are invited to climb atop of the Library Angel’s giant stack of books and await their own moment of chance discovery while taking in the view of the festival and surrounding scenery. In a return to the roots of the definition of an effigy, a figure representing the Library Angel is burned along with the Angel’s journals. Depending on the weather circumstances, the angel and journals can be burned along with her base of books, or somehow placed with the temple and burned together. The base of books can then be donated as a stage for another purpose within the community, or gifted to an organization in Denver to be used as installation art.  The effigy is a beautifully detailed two sided figure representing both the light and the shadow, sitting on top of a large base of books that appear to be real aside from their giant size. An 8 foot journal (or possibly two) stands open at the base of the effigy with turnable pages to contain the stories of synchronicity shared by participants. At night, colored lights and projected images/book titles add to the drama and allure of the books and figure.

  • The Guild – The Guild is infamous throughout Texas for bringing the best sound, aerial artists and hilarious performance art. We know you guys have the whole big sound camp thing covered but we want to bring our special flavor of party up to you. All the rumors are true, yes we are a cult.

  • THE KINDLING PROJECT – Kindling, is defined by Google as: noun / 1. easily combustible small sticks or twigs used for starting a fire. 2. (in neurology) a process by which a seizure or other brain event is both initiated and its recurrence made more likely. (Imagine a warmly illuminated, bottomless pit, shooting into the ground at a 60 degree angle. Imagine this pit being lined with thousands of tiny sticks, like a never-ending, hollow stack of firewood (see Radiant Example.jpg, and Firewood.jpg). When “infinite mirror” concepts are done right, they create bewilderment, curiosity, and wonder. *THE KINDLING PROJECT WILL NOT CAUSE ACTUAL SEIZURES.

  • The THING – The THING is a fully articulated skeletal robotic hand, about 7’ long, crafted from clear polycarbonate and aluminum using our new Shopbot! The sculpture will be mounted on a 36” square six wheel robot chassis and easily have the ability to pull a cart or “chariot” with one or two drivers.

>>Information coming soon.

  • Unified Flying Object series (UFOs) – Galactic ships hover like giant jewel seeds.  The Unified Flying Object series is a collection of inflatable geometric soft sculptures.  They are constructed with fabric, inflated with a fan, and illuminated with color changing LED lights.  Suspended in the air the UFOs act as navigational stars as well as safety beacons. They beckon from a far and when approached are mesmerizing (we’ve witnessed people laying beneath them for hours occasionally murmuring “Whoa… What? How???” etc before suddenly running off to get a friend and show them). Due to their appeal to varying walks of life the ground beneath them becomes a space where interaction and coexistence occur naturally.  Three of the four UFOs currently in our fleet are adorned with hand drawn mandala patterns. Optical illusions alternate in a multi centered system, transmitting information among them. Highly symmetrical hexagonal networks express molecular, biological and interstellar coherence. The beautiful triangular tiling design offers a unified map of atomic, gravitational and temporal fields. The patterns are drawn with sharpie and filled with rainbow neon paints that react with the LEDs creating a low-tech yet high impact animated art installation.
