GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF BOARD MEMBER OR OFFICER

• Passion and ideas about creating a community and event centered on
the Burning Man principles.

• Business or event experience preferred.

• Varying backgrounds. It would be ideal to get individuals who come
from different backgrounds. Boards are most successful when they have
people who bring different things to the table, e.g. attorneys,
accountants, event organizers, insurance people, artists, computer
jocks, musicians.

• Ability to play well with others.

COMMITMENT
• 3 year term. Must be able to commit to fulfill a full term in his/
her position.
• One meeting a month. More meetings as event approaches.
• Respond to board emails in a timely manner.
• At least two gate shifts during the event.
• Oversee numerous shift lead volunteers and support their successful contributions to the organization
• Further time as needed to fulfill duties and ensure a smooth and
fulfilling event.
• Board Members are distinct from officer positions. While it is preferable that the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary are Board Members, it is not required and elections for these positions will be held at a future time.

PROCESS AND UPCOMING DATES

The Board of Directors is elected by Team Ignition members from the 2010 event on August 14.

After the Board of Directors is elected, Directors-elect will serve in a mentoring role through the end of the year. Terms officially begin on January 1.

After the Board of Directors is elected, the Board will hold a separate election process for the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. More information on this election will be posted here.

Land Search still – and always – on

Posted on 28th June 2010 by guywire in Announcements

Check out our land requirements and please suggest land for next year’s festival. We’re looking at both mountains and plains (badlands!) locations that will be more accommodating for large art and large sound.

Apogaea 2010 Event Census Now Online

Posted on 16th June 2010 by guywire in Announcements

Please take the Apogaea 2010 Census – the papers at the event got all soggy so here it is in an online and slightly improved version.

http://www.ballotbin.com/voterReg.php?b=15019

You can take the census even if you did not attend, just n/a all the questions about things that you didn’t get to experience.

You’ll have to enter your email address then the site will email you a link to allow you to take the survey. This site seems quite trustworthy and won’t spam you, etc.
This can really help next year’s event! Make sure your voice is heard!

Things to Bring! / Events

Posted on 8th June 2010 by guywire in Announcements

Hey, Apogaeans!

In addition to your food, water, costumes-of-awesomeness, cup, and reusable plates/silverware, here are some things from the soon-to-be-printed WhoWhatWhereWhen that you might want to throw in your Apogaea pack:

Handmade creations, books, clothing, accessories, glowies, or other gifts to share with your fellow citizens at The Gifting Tree.
Your musical instrument(s) for Organix Sound Dome’s ongoing jam session.
Towel for the Sauna Dome (you wouldn’t go anywhere without your towel, would you, you hoopy frood?).
Black and white attire for the Thursday night Apogaea Welcome Party.
Hawaiian shirt, straw hat, leis, and your best tiki mug for the Hula Hideaway Luau Thursday night! Also accepting donations of rum or vodka (show your Hula Hosts and Hostesses some love!).
Bottle of champagne and/or brunch stuff to share for Friday morning’s Champagne Brunch potluck at Circus High Camp.
Green or recycled attire for Karma’s Green Soiree, Friday afternoon.
Noisemakers for the Hug Parade Friday afternoon.
Extra food/drink, especially avocado-based, for the Avocado Bar and Happy Hour at Centropolis, Friday evening.
Your sparkliest gloves, your ostrichiest fans, your ta-ta-liciousest pasties for the Happy Hour Burlesque Show Friday evening.
Friday at 6:30 Hula Hideaway hosts a Happy Hour and potluck-roast suckling pig preferred, but you could bring anything to share.
White attire for The White Queen’s Ball on Friday night.
Or, if that’s too literary for you, wear all blue for the infamous Return of the Camel Toe Jam. Camel fleas optional.
Saturday’s got a Bar-B-Q seminar-bring a sauce for other aficionados to taste. At Centropolis.
If you’ve already got a hoop, there’s the Hoop It Forward hoop decoration and hooping extravaganza. If not, they can probably set you up with one! Try it!.
Centropolis’ Margarita Symposium sounds soooo boring, having to taste all those different delicious tequilas, mixes, and margarita recipes. If you had to go. though, you should bring some tequila.
Clowns. You love them, you hate them, you fear them. [As well you should-ed.] The Clown Rave at Circus High Saturday night will either be a fun, happy place with music and red noses, or the stuff of nightmares. Either way, you should go. Wear your clown gear and be given libations.

See you in a couple days!

Quick info about Apogaea 2010

Posted on 4th June 2010 by guywire in Announcements

Apogaea is a non-vending event which means it doesn’t fund itself through fees from the sale of goods during the event. While this creates a better experience for you, it also means that the entire event functions through volunteers. A great way to make this event YOUR event is to volunteer to help out with theme camps, cars and community.

Got a good sense of humor and love to meet people? Sign up for gate, greeter or floater. Like playing Tetris and have an eye for spacial relations? Help people find the right parking location and keep the event area free of cars and safer for pedestrians.

Do you have a strong karmic relationship with mother nature and want to help other people realize theirs, too? Join the Green Team and keep all trash contained and not wasted. Have you been to Apogaea before and want to make it as good as you know it can be? Sign up for DPW and see the event in a way you’ve never seen it before. Really.

You don’t need certified medical or fire training to give time with the Bureau of Apogaean Medical and Fire or with the Rangers, but it helps. More descriptions of all these areas and others not mentioned here are available on this page: http://apogaea.com/volunteer/positions-open

YOU will be rewarded for your efforts and given cool stuff that your friends won’t have unless they do it with you. Yes! It is possible to do a shift with a friend. You’ll see the times still available and can sign up to be together. It’s a great place to put that nickname you like being called, but we will need you to include your full name and email address. Check out how easy it is: http://www.apogaea.com/volunteerschedule.php

If you don’t already have a ticket or need to get one: http://apogaea.com/tickets/ticket-sales Save space! Camp with a friend. Apogaea tickets make great birthday presents, love notes and thank yous.

Don’t pack away those winter coats yet! Very high elevation causes the evenings to be in the low 40s. While the many burn barrels are great places to hang out, you’ll want to be able to comfortably walk away from them, too.

A note about being green: Please limit your food and supply packaging. Take things out of big boxes and fix them into smaller containers or bags that you’ll reuse later. Some recycling will be available on-site, but what isn’t able to go there will need to be taken out by you. Cans over bottles is a good place to start. Large water containers vs lots of bottles also good. Bring re-usable cups with plates and utensils you can wash.

Who? What? Where? When? Deadlines? Huh?

Posted on 15th May 2010 by bughouse in About Apo, Announcements, Art & Camps

Apogaeans!

The deadline for getting things into the Who What Where When guide for Apogaea 2010 is 11:59 p.m. Sunday May 23!

Got a theme camp and want to promote an event?

Got a workshop and want to let people know about it?

Got a special DJ set and want people to boogie to it?

Burning a giant, community-built effigy and want to be sure people don’t forget to come?

The sooner you get your information in, the sooner we can let the community know about what you’ve got to contribute!

Please include:

1. Is your submission a continuing thing (e.g., a theme camp, art piece), a repeating event, or a one-time-only thing?

2. The day(s) of your event (Apogaea runs noon Thursday June 10 through Sunday June 13)

3. The time(s) of your event

4. A SHORT description (one to three sentences)

5. Location (if you know it. If you’re not sure yet, we can add “stop by the Info Booth for more information.” If that’s the case, please be sure to LET THE INFO BOOTH KNOW your event location/time!)

6. A contact e-mail or phone number (not for the WWWW, but for me to call if I have any questions)

Also, know that Saturday late morning/early afternoon is when many people want to hold their events. Choosing another day or time will increase the chances that people will be able to come to your event as well.

This Year’s Effigy–Your Participation Requested

Posted on 17th April 2010 by carolinekert in Announcements

This year’s effigy is titled “Communigy”– a conflation of “community” and “effigy.”

Communigy will give rise to radical participation, artistic self-expression, interactivity, and community building. The effigy at burner events has always been an anchor and focal point, both visually and as a gathering place for community interaction. However, it is usually executed by a small team led by the vision of one artist. This year, the effigy be built—literally— by every citizen of Apogaea.

Communigy consists of hundreds of identical plywood shapes (“segments”) that fit together in three dimensions like puzzle pieces. Each participant is given the opportunity—before or during Apogaea— to make at least one segment his or her own work of art. The segment can be painted, carved, sculpted, collaged, enveloped in crochet or studded with flashing LEDs—anything goes, as long as the attachment areas of the piece are not altered. At the event, each participant brings their segment to the effigy area and adds it to the sculpture in the way that they desire. As the event progresses, the Communigy becomes a living thing as it is added to and reconfigured, played with like a puzzle.

For burn night, Communigy will be sculpted into a beautiful multiple starburst shape. Segments arted out with non-burnable materials will be removed. And then it shall burn. More than just a metaphor, Communigy engages each participant in artistic self-expression and participation in a community project. How will the contribution of each individual—which stands alone as its own work of art— fit together into a larger expressive whole? More info and announcements on the Communigy Facebook page:

Design Contest Winner!

Posted on 18th March 2010 by carolinekert in Announcements

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s true!  We have a winner!

Congratulations to Ben Shearn.  His flyer and ticket design will be used on marketing materials for Apogaea 2010 (Artropolis).
We received a total of 3 awesome designs and ran it through a voting panel consisting of the members of Team Ignition.  Team Ignition is made of Apogaea’s: Team Leads, Board Members, Officers, Territorial Ambassadors and BM’s Regional Reps. Artists were kept anonymous to avoid any favoritism.

We’re keeping the design a bit of a secret, so you’ll have to buy your ticket or help post flyers to get a peek.  Keep posted for an announcement that our tickets have gone on sale–this will happen very soon.  And, don’t forget, discount tickets will only remain on sale for the first three weeks.

If you’d like the opportunity to vote on issues like ticket design, theme, and Board members, join Team Ignition!  We still need a number of Team Leads for the event, including:

Sound Coordination
Parking
Gate

2010 Apogaea Theme Announced

Posted on 20th January 2010 by guywire in About Apo, Announcements, Art & Camps - Tags: , ,

Hey all you artists and graphics gurus, Do you have visions of fancy floating through your mind? Want to share? Once again, the Apogaea Creative Committee is hosting a ticket and flyer design contest. Get your brilliant ideas in front of hundreds of artists and fellow burners.

Yes, “Artopolis” is the selected them for Apogaea 2010. We are calling for ticket and flyer artwork for this theme, so get your juices flowing and create away!!

Submissions should be sent to email hidden; JavaScript is required for entry into the competition. Deadline for all entries is no later than 12 AM February 8th 2010.

We will be using ONE design for both tickets and flyers. Winner will receive ONE free ticket to Apogaea 2010.

Art Guidelines*:

  • Flyer Design Size – final size 5.5″ x 4.25″ + .25″ bleed on all 4 sides = 6″ X 4.75″
  • Ticket Design Size – final size 5.5″ x 2″ + .25″ bleed on all 4 sides = 6″ X 2.5″
  • File Formats – tiff, eps, pdf, and high quality jpg files accepted
  • Resolution – 300 dpi is ideal, but files must be at least 200 dpi
  • Submissions will be judged based on concept, execution & image quality

Both tickets and flyers should use the same design. On each, you must include:

  • The name of the event, “Apogaea”
  • This year’s theme name, “Artropolis”
  • The Apogaea logo, which you can download here in EPS, JPG, and PNG formats
  • The tentative date of the event, June 10th – 13th 2010

*Please note that it is very important to stay within the developing guidelines. Pulling images off of the internet is usually not a good idea because of the low quality issues and copyright violations!

Deadline: 12:01 a.m., February 8, 2010. Send your Questions and/or your submission to email hidden; JavaScript is required. The Apogaea Creative Committee would like to wish you the best of luck!

Generators & Quiet Hours

Posted on 15th January 2010 by admin in About Apo, Announcements, Art & Camps

By popular vote from the community and the Apogaea board, there will be mandatory “Quiet Hours” for sound/theme camps at Apogaea this year.

  • Quiet hours will be 6am – 11am on Friday and Saturday and 8am – 11am on Sunday.

This means turn off all generators, and subsequently all amplified music. A few glorious hours of peace and quiet – well, at least a few hours without the megawatts thump of amplified music. That’s enough to get a good nap in. That’s enough to get a good nap in.

Sound levels will be enforced with decibel meters.

Also don’t forget we will be enforcing enclosed generators. Generator noise must not exceed 70dB at 10 feet – that’s about as loud as an average passenger car. Any generator that is found to be in violation will be turned off until the noise issue is remedied with better enclosure techniques. We’re not trying to be Nazis about this, we just need to make sure everyone is being respectful in such a limited, but beautiful space.

The Greening of Apogaea

Posted on 14th January 2010 by admin in About Apo, Announcements, Be Prepared - Tags: , ,

In an effort to keep waste down and follow the path of self-reliance, we are encouraging everyone to bring their own cup to Apogaea this year. Let’s try to avoid any kind of disposable cups. Let’s also try to avoid plasticware. Second hand stores are a great place to pick up sets of silverware that you can use or better yet…gift!

There will also be recycling bins set-up around Apo Town. Please use these ONLY for recycling materials. Self-Reliance is really your own responsibility and so is your trash. Help keep Apogaea and the Planet magnificent!
